Comparative study of ITIL and COBIT

The fundamental concept of ITIL and COBIT is discussed in this blog. These both are globally recognized IT governance frameworks. Firstly, a general overview about ITIL and COBIT is discussed. Later, the comparison between ITIL and COBIT is done on the based on their scope, approach and objective.


ITIL

ITIL simply stands for IT Infrastructure Library. It is one of the IT governance framework introduced by British government for the optimum utilization of the IT resources effectively and efficiently.

The main aim of ITIL within a business is:

  • to standardize the selection

  • to standardize the planning

  • to standardize the delivery and

  • to standardize the maintenance of IT services

The goal is to improve efficiency and achieve predictable service delivery.

ITIL is a global standard for IT Service Management and is considered most accepted model for IT Service Management in all categories of the organization.

COBIT

Control Objectives for Information and Related Technology (COBIT) is an IT enterprise management and governance framework developed by Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA) in 1996. It is a business framework build for IT help companies understand IT benefits and risks with its high-level security practices.

ITIL VS COBIT

Basically, ITIL and COBIT are complement to each other in an enterprise. These both provide guidance for governance and management of IT-related services by enterprises. They have been used in IT service management by IT professionals for many years.
